The plate heat exchangers are the equipment that is employed to transfer heat between two fluids without their mixing. These liquids are pumped between corrugated plates that may be gasketed, brazed or welded together to create a small and efficient heat transfer system.
The plates are stacked to create channels, allowing hot and cold fluids to flow alternately. This setup ensures that heat moves efficiently from one fluid to the other. Proper separation of the fluids, often maintained by seals, prevents mixing. When the fluids move in opposite directions, it is called the countercurrent principle, which is the most common method. In other cases, fluids flow in the same direction, following the parallel flow principle. Some fully welded plate heat exchangers may use the cross-flow principle instead. Across all designs, the unique corrugated pattern of the plates creates a turbulent flow, which improves heat transfer efficiency.
